What many people don’t realise is that MAN is one of the oldest surviving companies in Europe, or perhaps even in the world. The company’s origins date back to 1758, when Franz von der Wenge founded an ironworks in Oberhausen. This marked not only the beginning of MAN, but also of the mining industry in the Ruhr region. Talk about an influential company! Following a number of mergers and takeovers, the company ‘GHH’ was formed in 1873.
In a completely different part of Germany, two engineering works were founded: one in 1840 by Ludwig Sander in Augsburg, and another a year later by Johann Klett in Nuremberg. In 1908, the companies merged to form Maschinenfabrik Augsburg-Nürnberg, which explains the name. In the 1920s, the company was taken over by GHH.
MAN is the pioneer in the field of diesel engines; they were literally at the very cradle of their development, together with Rudolph Diesel, of course. They were therefore the first company to fit diesel engines in their lorries. Incidentally, the first lorry appeared in 1915, when a Swiss Saurer lorry was built under licence by the group.
MAN has grown significantly through acquisitions and partnerships. For example, there were partnerships with Saviem (Renault’s commercial vehicle subsidiary), which purchased engines from MAN and in turn designed and supplied cabs. Various renowned bus and lorry manufacturers have been acquired over the years. The best known are Büssing, Steyr, ERF, Star, Neoplan and ÖAF. MAN was later acquired by Volkswagen, which incorporated it into its commercial vehicle subsidiary, Traton. MAN is therefore not only a sister company to Scania, but also to the Brazilian Volkswagen truck division and International Navistar.
By 2025, there will be MAN factories in Germany, Poland, Austria, South Africa, Turkey and Mexico. In addition, MAN products are also manufactured under licence in China, South Africa and the United Arab Emirates.
MAN has a wide range of models, with logical names. The first letters are a T and a G, which stand for Trucknology Generation, a range of lorries that began in 1999 with the TGA. Sometimes this is preceded by an e to indicate that it is an electric vehicle. The letter following TG indicates the weight class. We have listed the MAN lorry models for you below.
MAN has had a heavy-duty van in its range since 2017. It was developed in collaboration with Volkswagen and is, in essence, largely identical to that brand’s Crafter. They are therefore produced on the same production line at the factory in Września, Poland.
The MAN TGL is MAN’s lightest genuine lorry and the successor to the MAN L2000. This model is built at the factory in Steyr (Austria) and is particularly suitable for urban distribution. In 2006, this model won the prestigious ‘Truck of the Year’ title.
In 2005, the MAN TGM was launched, featuring the same compact cab as the TGL but with a heavier chassis. Naturally, more powerful engines are also available for this model, making it suitable for slightly heavier distribution tasks. It is therefore popular, for example, for the distribution of beverages.
The MAN TGS and TGX were unveiled in the autumn of 2007 as the successors to the MAN TGA. TGS was the new name for the TGA models with the narrower cab. As well as for heavy-duty distribution, these models are also very popular and well-suited as lorries for the construction sector. Well-known bodybuilders such as Wierda and Maurer therefore most frequently use this model as the basis for their own specialised creations.
The MAN TGX was also unveiled at the same time as the TGS. This is MAN’s top-of-the-range model, featuring the maximum permitted width for the cab. As a result, it is slightly heavier, but also offers optimum space for the driver. Are you looking for a MAN for international transport? You’ll sleep best in the TGX!
