Following the launch of its first passenger car in 1927, Volvo unveiled its first commercial vehicle just one year later. In the early years, Volvo products were sold exclusively in Sweden, but after the Second World War, the Western European market – and with it the Dutch market – became increasingly important. The brand played a key role in the post-war reconstruction.
In the 1980s, the company set its sights beyond Europe and grew to become a major player in Canada and the United States, partly following the acquisition of the White Motor Company, the Autocar Company and General Motors’ lorry division.
The Volvo Group sold its passenger car division to free up capital for the acquisition of the truck division of Renault Trucks, including the American Mack Trucks. Later, Nissan Diesel was also acquired, which continued as UD Trucks. In addition to lorries under these four brands, the Volvo Group also manufactures construction machinery, buses and marine engines.
Volvo is Latin for ‘I roll’. The company was founded by SKF, the famous Swedish manufacturer of roller bearings, and remained a subsidiary of SKF until 1935.
