Where the Scania P-series is the little one of the Swedish family for local transport, and the R- and S-series are the largest models for international transport, the G-series falls in between on all levels. In terms of height, power, and distance: this model is widely used in domestic transportation.
The Scania G-Series has been a mainstay in European transportation for years. Of course, there’s a good reason for that. When you choose Scania, you’re choosing proven reliability, strong residual value, and a powertrain known for its low fuel consumption and high uptime. The G-Series, in particular, occupies an attractive middle ground: more robust and powerful than the lighter distribution models, yet more compact and versatile than true long-haul trucks. For many transport companies, that’s exactly the sweet spot.
That versatility makes the G-Series highly adaptable. Think of regional distribution, construction transport, dump truck operations, or tanker transport. These are all tasks where power, visibility, and maneuverability come together—and where a low curb weight is also desirable. Thanks to an extensive range of engines from approximately 280 to 560 pk and various chassis configurations, there’s always a model that suits the job—whether in the city, on a construction site, or on a rural road. At the same time, the cab offers a comfortable workspace with good visibility and ergonomics, making it suitable for both day trips and multi-day operations.

On March 31, 2004, Scania introduced the PRT range as the successor to the 4-Series. According to the official statement, the brand moved away from model names with numbers because BMW objected to the name “5-Series” also being used for trucks. Consequently, Scania opted for letter-based designations going forward. The fact that the 5 Series, equipped with the well-known 9-liter engine, was to be called the Scania 95 certainly played a role in this decision; after all, that name had already been in use by DAF for more than 15 years.
The G-Series was not available immediately upon the introduction of the new range but followed later, on September 5, 2007. The T-Series had already been discontinued by that time, so these models never rolled off the assembly line together.
That first G-Series was based on the R-Series. Due to the lower-mounted cab, there was no room in this model for the well-known V8 engine. At the same time, this lower cab position—which, thanks to the modular system, is largely identical to that of the R-Series—reduces weight and makes entry more ergonomic.
Because the G-Series is popular as a construction vehicle, you also see this model series relatively often in the extra-robust “XT” version. The Scania G-Series XT, introduced in September 2017, was specially developed for heavy-duty and rugged work where standard trucks fall short. This rugged version stands out with an extra-strong steel bumper that protrudes up to 150 millimeters forward, a protective shield, and a towing hitch, making it ideal for use in construction and other forms of off-road transport. Optionally, the truck can be equipped with an electronic braking system (EBS) featuring disc or drum brakes, reinforced parabolic front springs, and larger wheel wells for wider tires. Various vertical exhaust options and modern infotainment systems with touchscreens are also available. Since deliveries began in late 2017, the XT has become a popular choice for transport companies seeking to combine reliability and durability with maximum versatility.
